Dining out should be an enjoyable, relaxing experience where you get to connect with people and break bread (sometimes literally).

But whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, enjoying a casual meal with friends, or trying out a new restaurant, there are ways to enhance your dining experience. Here are five tips to ensure your next outing is a memorable one.

Research Your Restaurant

Before you head out, take some time to research the restaurant you’re planning to visit. Check out their menu online and read reviews on platforms like Yelp or TripAdvisor. Take reviews with a grain of salt; a lot of people think they’re critics, but some of the musings sound like they were written under the influence of a “hangry” person. That said, it’s still worth keeping some of this in mind before you head to the restaurant so you can temper your expectations accordingly.

Make a Reservation

If reservations are available, make one. You might not feel like you need one. It’s a Wednesday night, no one’s going to be out, so it shouldn’t be hard to get a table, right? This thought process often comes back to bite you in the form of an unexpected forty-five minute wait. This is particularly important for popular restaurants or during busy seasons. A reservation not only secures your spot but also allows the staff to prepare for your arrival, which is enormously beneficial if you’re going with a larger group.

Chat With Your Server

Your server is your guide to the dining experience. They can provide insights into the menu, suggest wine pairings, and offer recommendations based on your preferences. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the dishes, such as ingredients, preparation methods, or specials of the day. Also, if you have any dietary restrictions, allergies, or preferences, make sure to communicate these to your server. This is an article about how to improve your dining experience, but one surefire to ruin it is by accidentally consuming something you’re allergic to!

Be Present

Many people tend to rush through meals, even when they’re at restaurants. But you’re spending good money to enjoy the experience, so do your best to savor it! A great way to do this is to share plates with others at the table. Getting lots of small plates encourages a familial feeling and discussion about the food. It’s also a wonderful way to try lots of different things, usually for less than it would cost to purchase an entree for yourself.

Know Your Dining Out Etiquette

Dining out etiquette is crucial—and we’re not talking about keeping your elbows on the table while you’re eating. When it comes to tipping, aim to leave a gratuity of 20-25% of your total bill, depending on the quality of service. Tipping generously not only shows appreciation for good service but can also lead to better experiences in the future; trust us, servers, bartenders, and hosts will remember a good tip and go out of their way to make you happy when you come back.
