6 Bold, Unique Styles of Wine You’ll Want to Uncork

I love a glass of wine at the end of a long day, but sometimes I get bored of the same old.

Are you tired of the same boring Sauv Blanc? Here are six unique styles of wine that anyone would be glad to raise a glass for.

Orange Wine

We’re not talking about wine made from oranges here. Orange wine is a white wine that’s made like a red wine. The process involves fermenting white grapes with their skins and seeds, giving the wine its distinctive amber hue and complex flavor profile. Orange wine has many of the aromatic qualities of white wine combined with the tannic structure of red wine. Chances are, you’ve probably seen it popping up on menus recently, and that’s because it’s the best of both worlds!

Sparkling Shiraz

This unique style combines the rich, fruity flavors of Shiraz with the effervescence of sparkling wine, creating a delightful and unexpected experience. It’s perfect for those who find Lambrusco too sweet (more on that later) but still want something bubbly and red. The complex flavor holds up well against rich dishes like beef stew or roast lamb. And it’s even better to sip if you plan on putting any of those meats on the grill!

Ice Wine

Those of you who love your vinho verde and Moscato, wake up—it’s time you found a new wine to satisfy your sweet tooth! This dessert wine is made from grapes that have naturally frozen on the vine, concentrating their sugars and flavors. The result is an intensely sweet and aromatic wine with notes of honey, tropical fruits, and caramel. Try it with creme brulee for an intensely decadent post-meal sugar rush, or enjoy it on its own.

Lambrusco

Classics like Chianti or Barolo might come to mind when you think of Italian wine. But have you ever tried Lambrusco? This sparkling red wine from the Emilia-Romagna region is a hidden gem worth exploring. Lambrusco can range from dry to sweet, and its refreshing bubbles and fruity flavors make it incredibly versatile. The sweetness makes it an excellent pairing with anything tomato. But that’s not necessarily revolutionary for an Italian wine!

Txakoli

Venturing into Spain’s Basque Country, you’ll find the delightful Txakoli wine. This slightly sparkling, high-acid wine is typically made from the Hondarrabi Zuri grape. Txakoli is light, crisp, and often has a hint of salinity, making it a perfect match for seafood. Enjoy a glass with fresh oysters or anything of a briny, citrusy quality. It’s even delicious with light kinds of pasta like aglio e olio or as a way to freshen your palate with more traditionally Spanish dishes like paella.

Port

Port is in a category of its own, but it is still technically a wine and a relatively sweet one. It’s often enjoyed as a digestif at the end of a meal. It comes in many varieties, most commonly ruby and tawny. Ruby often has more qualities resembling fresh berries, while tawny often has notes of toasted nuts and caramel. Both have their place in the wine world and should find a place in your wine rack!
