Sunset is one of the most beautiful times of the day, a time when the low-angle light and dust particles in the air combine to create intense colors.

Watching the sun setting is pretty almost anywhere, but there are certain places that are renowned for having especially spectacular sunsets. You won’t want to miss any on this list.

Santorini, Greece

Many travelers claim that Santorini has the best sunsets in the world. They’re remarkable for cliffs with vibrant colors and the incredibly blue Aegean Sea as a backdrop.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

In the middle of the day, the Grand Canyon is still impressive for its size, but the high sun washes out a lot of the color. At sunset, though, the cliffs glow an intense red, and depending on the location, you may get to see the sun setting directly over the canyon.

The Window, Texas

The Window is a gap between two peaks in the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. At certain times of the year, the sun sets behind one of the peaks, silhouetting it. Even better might be seeing the sun go down directly in the gap.

Big Sur, California

The entire Pacific Coast is spectacular and great for sunsets. Big Sur, however, is perhaps the most spectacular section, and you also have a better chance of clear skies than you do farther north up the coast. Offshore rock formations sometimes perfectly frame the sinking sun.

Horsetail Fall, California

El Capitan in Yosemite National Park is world-famous for its massiveness and its place in rock climbing history. Horsetail Fall is a wispy waterfall that spills off the top only in winter and early spring. Every February, when weather conditions are just right, the setting sun illuminates Horsetail Fall, painting it a striking orange-red and earning it its nickname, the Firefall.

Key West, Florida

Key West is the westernmost of the Florida Keys and the southernmost end of legendary U.S. Highway 1. Palm trees help frame the sun as it sets over what seems like an endless expanse of ocean.

Haleakala, Hawaii

This massive dormant volcano makes up about 75% of the land surface in Hawaii. Its high summit is perfect for watching sunsets. Often, you are in clear skies with clouds below you, so you get to see the sun sinking into the clouds.

Uluru, Australia

Remote and bereft of light pollution, the Australian Outback has air quality that makes it one of the world’s best places to watch sunsets. The best spot of all is Uluru, a rock monolith that glows a fiery red in the fading light. Another option is to go to the other side and watch the sun setting behind it.

Travelers from around the world rave about the sunsets at this island. The beaches are the best places to view them for the combination of a sky that appears on fire while the ocean waves crash on the shore.

This windswept island just off the coast is known for its raw, rugged landscapes. While clouds frequently impair sunset-watching, clear days allow the setting sun to transform the sky into orange and red blazes while accentuating the land features.

Egypt

Sandy desert landscapes are usually excellent at sunset because the dunes come alive with color while deep shadows emerge among the ripples in the sands. Egypt has an extra-special touch when it comes to sunsets because you watch the sun transform legendary features such as the Giza pyramids and the Sphinx.
