You really want to make this recipe as authentic as possible, but you’re having a hard time finding the one ingredient that everyone says is absolutely necessary to make it so. Here are five tips to help you get what you’re looking for.

Try Your Local Farmer’s Market

Here’s another excuse to shop local—you might just find some hidden gems you wouldn’t at the grocery store! This all depends on how bustling your local market is; some are quite small and might not offer the same variety of fruits and vegetables. But still, it’s usually an excellent place to try out new ingredients or get inspired, so why not stop here first if you’re looking for something specific?

Visit a Specialty Food Store

Anyone living in a big city probably has a few specialty food markets on rotation or is at least aware of their existence. See if there are any near you that have the secret ingredient you’re after. For example, if you’re looking for pandan leaves, you might want to try a Southeast Asian-specific food store that has less common ingredients like that. It’s not a guarantee that you’ll find what you’re looking for there, but it’s an excellent place to start.

Try Shopping Online

Struggling to find the ingredient locally? That’s when online shopping can be your best friend—depending on what the ingredient is. It’s much more challenging to order fresh ingredients. But if you need a spice or vinegar, chances are you’re a quick search away from having one in your cart. It’s also the answer if you don’t live in a big city where specialty food stores are more common. Just be sure to check shipping times and costs, as some specialty items may take longer to arrive.

Connect With Other Food Enthusiasts

Connecting with other food enthusiasts can open up a world of unique ingredients. Joining a cooking class or a local culinary community can introduce you to new flavors and techniques. Many classes focus on specific cuisines or cooking styles, allowing you to learn about the unique ingredients that define them.

In addition to classes, you should consider joining online food communities or forums. These platforms often feature discussions about unique ingredients, where members share their experiences and sources. Some might even be able to point you in the right direction to a store near you where they’ve had success!

Learn More About Global Cuisine

If you still can’t find what you’re looking for but want to make the dish, learning more about the cuisine and the culture it came from can help. It’ll often uncover potential swaps that, even if they aren’t traditional, will still make do in a pinch. It’s a last resort in case the other four tips don’t work, but one that doesn’t mean you have to waste all the other food you bought to make the recipe happen.

You could even go to a restaurant that serves the cuisine you’re trying to make to learn more about the ingredient. The staff might have tips on where to find them and how to make the most of them in your cooking!
