Let’s talk about food. We like it. We eat it. Sometimes, food is good for you, and sometimes, it’s bad. But some food is actually downright dangerous for you. Unfortunately, some of these foods are actually pretty popular. For some reason, people don’t seem to realize that eating these foods can be really bad for you and very dangerous.

We asked some experts which popular foods you should be wary of and avoid including in your diet!

Raw Milk

The raw milk trend is gaining steam in the healthy living circles, but it’s very, very dangerous, warns René Ficek, the owner and operator of Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating and a registered dietitian and nutritionist.

She said, “Raw milk, which is milk that has not been pasteurized to kill harmful bacteria, poses significant health risks. Consuming raw milk can expose individuals to dangerous pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. These bacteria can lead to severe foodborne illnesses characterized by symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and dehydration. In extreme cases, these infections can result in severe complications or even be life-threatening, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.”

Readers should be warned that consuming raw milk is incredibly dangerous for everyone, but it’s especially dangerous for pregnant women.

Health authorities, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), strongly advise against consuming raw milk and its products.

The advocates for raw milk claim that it tastes better or some other unproven health claims, but these risks should not be discounted. Pasteurized milk should be the only milk you drink.

Reheated Rice

Gabrielle Marie Yap, senior editor and culinary entrepreneur behind Carnivore Style, warns about using reheated rice as leftovers. She cautions, “Reheated rice is a common leftover, but it can be risky if not handled properly. Rice can harbor Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that produces toxins causing food poisoning. These spores can survive cooking and multiply if the rice is left at room temperature for too long. To avoid this, cool the rice quickly after cooking it and store it in the fridge. When reheating, make sure that it’s steaming hot all the way through.”

Packaged Microwave Popcorn

Gabrielle also warns against packaged microwave popcorn. She says, “The convenience of packaged microwave popcorn is appealing, but many brands contain additives and unhealthy fats. These bags can leach harmful substances into the popcorn, and excess salt, artificial flavors, and preservatives can divert this otherwise nutritious whole grain into a health hazard. I suggest making popcorn from scratch using simple, healthy oils and seasoning it with herbs and spices for a flavorful yet wholesome snack.”

Raw Sprouts

Mike Schmidt, an attorney from Schmidt & Clark LLP, specializes in food poisoning cases, unfortunately, knows first-hand how dangerous certain foods can be. He cautions against eating raw sprouts despite being touted as a healthy food. He said, “These sprouts are particularly vulnerable to bacterial contamination. Their warm, moist growth conditions make them ideal breeding grounds for bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. These bacteria can lead to severe gastrointestinal illness, particularly in vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. If you’re fond of sprouts, it’s generally safer to cook them thoroughly to eliminate any potential pathogens.”

Sushi

He also cautions against undercooked or raw sushi, particularly in sushi.

He said, “Despite its global popularity, sushi carries a notable risk, particularly when prepared with raw fish. The primary concern is parasitic infections and bacterial contamination. Fish can harbor parasites like Anisakis, which can lead to severe gastrointestinal issues if ingested. On top of that, raw seafood can be a haven for pathogens like Vibrio, especially in warmer waters. If you plan to purchase them, make sure that the sushi is sourced from reputable places that follow strict safety guidelines, but even then, the risk can never be entirely eliminated.”
