Grocery shopping might be necessary, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are the eight grocery items you should always buy on sale and why shopping this way is a game-changer for your budget.

Canned Goods

Canned goods have a long shelf life, making them perfect candidates for stocking up. Whether it’s vegetables, beans, or soups, buying these items on sale ensures you have a versatile base for many meals. By purchasing these when discounted, you save money and always have options. Most canned goods are already inexpensive, but every little bit helps!

Frozen Foods

Frozen vegetables, fruits, and even meats can often be found on sale and are excellent for long-term storage, especially if you have the space for them in a chest freezer. These items keep their nutritional value and can be used in a pinch when fresh produce isn’t available. The convenience and cost savings are hard to beat. Since many frozen produce options are frozen at the peak of their freshness, they could even be better than the fresh produce, depending on the season.

Pasta and Rice

Staples like pasta and rice are frequently on sale and are essential for countless recipes. These shelf-stable items can be the foundation of hearty meals, from spaghetti bolognese to a comforting risotto to the ultimate weeknight stir fry. Stock up during these times to keep your pantry ready for virtually any meal you can dream up.

Cereal and Breakfast Items

Many breakfast items, including cereals, oatmeal, and pancake mixes, often go on sale. These are perfect to buy in bulk since they have a long shelf life. Think about your morning routine—having a variety of breakfast options readily available can make your mornings smoother and less stressful. These items have also increased significantly over the past few years, so buying them on sale is almost a must to justify the cost (looking at you, Cheerios!).

Buying meat and poultry on sale and freezing them is a fantastic way to enjoy quality proteins without the hefty price tag. Look for sales on chicken breasts, ground beef, or even steak that you can break out for a special occasion—or just a special Wednesday night. Not only do you save money buying your meat and poultry on sale, but you also have the flexibility to plan meals without last-minute grocery runs.

Flour, sugar, baking powder, and other baking essentials frequently go on sale, especially around the holidays (which is most likely when you’ll need them). Stocking up on these items can save you money throughout the year. You never want to find yourself in the middle of a baking recipe only to realize you’re out of a critical ingredient. Keeping your pantry stocked with sale items ensures you won’t have to.
