Life is often a whirlwind of tasks and meetings. And despite our best efforts, things slip through the cracks. Meal prep is high on the list of things that slip, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are six ways you can still eat well, even on the most jam-packed days on your calendar.

Prep Ingredients, Not Just Meals

Sometimes, the barrier to cooking a healthy meal is all that time it takes to prepare the ingredients. By pre-chopping vegetables, marinating proteins, and portioning out grains ahead of time, you can significantly cut down the time it takes to get dinner on the table.

For example, if you know you’ll be making stir-fries or salads at some point in the week, you can wash and chop all necessary veggies at once. Store them in airtight containers in the fridge, and when it’s time to cook, you’ll just have to throw everything together and enjoy it in minutes.

Buy and Use Ingredients You Can Use a Lot

When you go shopping, try to buy versatile ingredients that can be used in a lot of dishes, allowing you to mix and match throughout the week. Think about ingredients like chicken breast, sweet potatoes, or quinoa.

You could roast a batch of sweet potatoes and use them in a salad, as a side dish, or even in a breakfast hash. This not only keeps your meals interesting but also reduces the amount of prep work you need to do.

Make Clever Use of Your Freezer

Your freezer can be a game changer for meal prep. Freezing meals and ingredients extends their shelf life. It ensures you have a backup plan. Soups, stews, casseroles, and even cooked grains freeze exceptionally well.

You can also freeze chopped vegetables and fruits, which can be a time-saver for smoothies or stir-fries. Make life even easier by labeling everything so you can grab and go whenever you need it!

Believe in the Power of Batch Cooking

Batch cooking is a meal prep strategy that can save you loads of time. The idea is to cook large quantities of a particular dish and then divide it into portions to be eaten throughout the week.

Think of it as cooking once and eating many times. For instance, you could make a big pot of chili, a large tray of roasted vegetables, or a big batch of quinoa. Store these in individual containers, and you have ready-to-go meals for the next few days. Keep things interesting by batching meals that can overlap, like adding some of your quinoa to the chili to stretch it further.

Invest in the Right Storage Containers

The right storage containers can make a world of difference in your meal prep game. Invest in a set of high-quality, durable containers that are microwave-safe, freezer-friendly, and leak-proof.

Glass containers are a great option as they are easy to clean and don’t keep odors locked in. Having a variety of sizes will also help you store different types of meals and portions efficiently. Proper storage not only keeps your food fresh but also makes it easy to see what you have on hand, reducing food waste.
