When we’re growing up, it’s easy to think that the ways our families do things are the ways everyone else does them. Then, one day, we’re older and realize that, actually, some of those things weren’t the norm.
Some turned out to be downright eccentric! We explored this topic and have gathered some of our favorite examples here. Did your family do any of these? Do you still do any yourself?
Canvas Cloth in the Freezer
This could work for you if you have to chop up some nuts. If you put the cloth over a cutting board and start chopping, it will make the pieces stick so that they don’t fly off all over the place.
Cutting Off the Ends of Hams
There’s nothing wrong with the ends of a ham. If you saw people cutting them off, it was probably to make the ham fit inside the baking pan.
Frozen Brownie and Cocoa Mixes
They’re quick and easy to make, and they don’t cost much. It’s an easy way to have sweet treats always available without spending a lot on processed junk food.
Homemade Salad Spinner
Salad spinners remove excess moisture from rinsed greens. You can spend money on a mechanized one, or you can go old-school and use a clean pillowcase or a plastic bag and just shake it all around like a crazy person!
Drawers as Holders
Have you struggled to follow a cookbook recipe because the angle was all wrong? Open a drawer and set the cookbook at an angle against the counter!
Natural Refrigerators
If outside temperatures are cold enough for a long enough time, you can use the outdoors as a refrigerator or freezer. Just make sure animals can’t ghetto your food. People in Alaska have been known to get a moose in hunting season and then leave it on a cabin roof all winter long!
Lemons in the Freezer
Frozen lemons are easy to zest. They also last way longer in the freezer than they do in the fridge.
Human Popcorn Maker
We’re not sure if this actually happened, but it was our favorite example that we came across. Someone supposedly buttered her brother’s back, had him lie face-down by the fireplace, and then put popcorn kernels on his back!
Freeze the Ginger, Too
Ginger can be difficult to peel without losing a bunch of it. Freezing it makes it easier to peel; you can even do it with a spoon.
Bay Leaf in Flour and Rice
This supposedly keeps pests away. Perhaps it’s better to say you’re keeping them at bay (groan)!
Lining the Sink With Newspaper
Are you peeling or trimming carrots, potatoes, or something else? By lining the sink with newspaper, you can just wrap up all the scraps when you finish and throw everything in the trash. No cleaning counters or cutting boards!
Butter Knives for Lid Removal
If a lid is stubborn, you can use the handle end of a butter knife to tap it a few times, and that often loosens it up. It’s also safer than trying to pry the lid open with the blade.
Cooking a Turkey Upside Down
The classic way of cooking a turkey is simply an aesthetic thing. Cooking a turkey with the breast side down can add a browning effect, and juices dripping into the meat keep it moist.
Peeling, Boiling, and Freezing Potatoes
If your parents did this, it might have been surprising to learn that you don’t have to precook potatoes before preparing them. However, people who do this insist they taste better and that they’re crispier when fried.
Kitchen Scissors Instead of Knives
Good kitchen shears are strong and cut better than a lot of knives do. They’re especially good at cutting through bones. If you buy a high-end set of kitchen knives, a pair of kitchen shears will probably come with it.
