Name a more iconic duo than salt and pepper in the culinary world. You probably can’t! But did you know that black pepper is an astounding ingredient all on its own?

It’s so much more than just a season, and we’re covering the five reasons why you should be using more of it!

It Brings the Flavor With Gentle Heat

Salt and pepper have both become staples in virtually every recipe for a good reason—they help enhance the flavor of whatever you use them on. And while salt is mandatory, you’d be surprised how much you’d miss black pepper if it wasn’t there! It’s not necessarily spicy, but it’s just spicy enough to elevate the flavors in a dish and take it to the next level.

It’s Healthy

Black pepper is a nutritional powerhouse! It contains piperine, which research suggests can improve how your body absorbs nutrients. That means all those vitamins and minerals in your dish have a much easier time finding out where they’re needed in your body. It also has antioxidant properties, so it’s effective for those who want to fight off illness with a few extra cracks over their chicken soup!

It’s Versatile

Black pepper is like the Swiss Army knife of spices. It can go with just about anything! From savory dishes to sweet treats, black pepper is always ready to step in and save the day. Want to spice up your pasta? Toss in some black pepper. Feeling adventurous with your dessert? A pinch of black pepper in chocolate cake can add an unexpected depth that will leave your guests wondering what your secret ingredient is.
And let’s not forget about drinks! Ever tried a black pepper-infused cocktail? It’s a game-changer. Honestly, black pepper is even a tasting note in some wines and beer—it’s just that universal!

It’s Efficient in Its Strength

You don’t always have to use a lot of black pepper to get a lot from it. It’s not a major benefit, but for the frugal among us who want cost-effective flavor, black pepper is one of the better options. It’s even better if you can crack it fresh; store-bought pre-ground black pepper often loses some of its potency, so it’s much more cost-effective to buy it in whole peppercorns and grind it yourself. Recipes that otherwise call for exotic spices can get a similar warming effect from black pepper, and it plays nicely with those spices if you want to use both!

The Spice Can Boost Your Mood

Black pepper might just be the spice that lifts your spirits just when you need it. The aroma of freshly cracked black pepper has been known to stimulate the senses and can even evoke feelings of happiness. Plus, cooking with it can be therapeutic. The act of grinding peppercorns can be oddly satisfying, and the resulting aroma wafting through your kitchen can create a warm, inviting atmosphere. It’s not a substitute for meditation or other mindfulness techniques by any means, but it’s still a benefit that’s easy to enjoy just by cooking with it!
