Citrus might as well be a staple pantry ingredient—it’s just that versatile. But it’s probably even more versatile than you realize. Here are six reasons you should never leave the grocery store without a bit of fresh citrus.

It’s Good for You

Citrus fruits are packed with essential vitamins and nutrients that can significantly benefit your health. They are particularly rich in vitamin C, which is crucial for immune function. You might not reach for a lime or lemon if you’re looking for a healthy snack. But grapefruit and oranges are jam-packed with these essential nutrients and also don’t have nearly as intense of a sour kick to them.

Citrus, particularly lemons and limes, show up in 80-90% of the recipes you’ll ever make. Even if a recipe calls for vinegar or something similarly acidic, you can still swap the vinegar out for citrus for a bright, fresh note. You can also add a delicate and floral citrus flavor by using the zest in sauces or as a garnish. Bakers should also recognize the power of citrus; a touch of zest can balance the sweetness of cakes or frosting.

It’s a Natural Cleaning Agent

Looking to put your leftover citrus to good use? You can use it to clean your kitchen! Lemons in particular are fantastic for eliminating odors or removing stains. And you don’t even have to use a fresh lemon to get the benefits! You can use an already-squeezed citrus to freshen up everything from cutting boards to compost piles. Or mix lemon juice with baking soda to create a paste for scrubbing tough stains.

It Can Inspire Creativity

Having a stocked pantry makes coming up with new dishes much simpler. But pantry ingredients also need some lift to elevate them to new heights. That’s where things like herbs and citrus come in. Herbs are much more delicate, but citrus lasts longer if you know how to store it. That way, whenever you need to whip something up for dinner, you can look at your lemons and see what pops into your head!

It Can Help Keep You Hydrated

Hydration is a cornerstone of health. However, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily easy to get your eight glasses a day. Adding citrus to your water can help make drinking water more interesting! It sounds silly, but their refreshing flavors can make drinking fluids more enjoyable. Add slices of lemon, lime, or orange to your water bottle for a flavorful twist that encourages you to drink more throughout the day.

It Can Boost Your Mood

This might sound like a bit of a stretch at first, but think about how many things are citrus-scented. There’s a reason for this: the smell of citrus is invigorating and uplifting! But instead of spending unnecessary money on candles or room sprays, just keep some fresh citrus at home! And some studies have shown that citrus scents can help reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of calm and well-being throughout your home.
