You’re planning a night out and have heard mixed things about a place you’ve always wanted to try.

How do you know if it’s worth it?

Here are six hints that a restaurant might not be worth the hype.

It’s Not Very Clean

You don’t necessarily have to enter a restaurant to know it doesn’t keep up with its cleaning routine. Reviews will usually call this out, and it’s particularly damning if many reviews are suggesting they have a cleaning problem.

After all, if the dining area isn’t well maintained, can you really trust that the kitchen is any different? Always take a moment to observe your surroundings as you enter. If the first impression is less than clean, it might be time to reconsider your choice.

Strange Menu Choices

Have you ever been to one of the diners that seems to have 100+ menu items?

Think about when the last time that scallop stir-fry was ordered; you’re probably not getting a quality dish. A great restaurant balances its signature dishes with seasonal specials and new creations. Otherwise, you might still get a decent dish brought to your table, but whether it’s worth the money is another story.

Overwhelming Negative Reviews or Word of Mouth

Ask the people in your life whose opinions you trust what they think of the restaurant you’re interested in. Going online and reading reviews can also help, but take these with a grain of salt; they’re often overinflated with negativity to an alarming degree.

But if measured, honest comments still say that this place isn’t worth it, it’s probably time to listen and head elsewhere.

Poor Food Presentation

They say you eat with your eyes first. And while it won’t make a difference to everyone, a streamlined kitchen that’s proud of the food it produces will also care about how it looks. If you can, check for pictures of the dishes online.

They don’t necessarily need to be plated to Michelin star standards, but they should at least look like effort was put into preparing them.

A Noisy or Unpleasant Atmosphere

You decided to give the place a shot. You walk in, and something just feels off. Yes, it is okay to be weirded out about the techno music blasting at an Italian joint. A good restaurant strikes a balance between lively and comfortable, allowing you to enjoy your conversation and meal.

The ambiance should match the dining experience the restaurant wants to offer. It could be a cozy, quiet nook or a vibrant, bustling eatery. It doesn’t have to be ideal—most restaurants can’t please everyone—but it should at least make sense.

Underwhelming Service

If you’re getting the short end of the stick with your service or are reading about this being an issue, it’s probably going to be a challenging experience. And it doesn’t even have to be rude or negative employees, either.

Slow or disorganized service can frustrate customers. It often reflects deeper issues in the restaurant’s management and operations. Reflect on how long you’re willing to wait and how much disorganization you will tolerate.
