Keeping everything under control in the kitchen can be a tough undertaking if you are one of those who cook everything or at least most things from scratch. If you want to ensure you and your family are getting the best of the best from food, then sadly, there is no way around it, and cooking at home is simply the only way to go.

Luckily, there are several things that one could do to keep things under control. Everyone should strive to save money and time, keep stress levels low, and get the most out of their kitchen. Read on as we discuss tips on optimizing your time in the kitchen.

1. Plan Ahead

By making grocery lists and planning your meals ahead of time, you could prevent yourself from missing ingredients or not getting the right type of food in at the right time. When we fail to plan meals ahead of time, we may end up eating convenience foods, which are far less healthy than home-cooked food.

Making grocery lists also prevents you from spending money on unnecessary items. When you shop blindly without a list to guide you, you may end up buying perishable foods that may spoil if they are not used in the coming days due to poor planning.

2. Double Cook the Favorites

If there is a meal that you or your family can’t get enough of, why not cook it in a double batch next time? Cooking in higher volumes saves you a lot of time, stress, and even a little money, as you’ll only be using the oven or stove once.

3. Use Perishables Before They Expire

Nothing is worse than throwing away a bunch of vegetables because you didn’t cook with them before they went bad. Even if you have to chop them up and freeze them or make soup with them, preventing your perishables from going bad can save you some money and stress.

4. Embrace Leftovers

Leftovers from a meal that you made a day before are perfectly fine to consume a day or even three later. This will not only reduce your time cooking, but it’ll also save you some money.

5. Clean as You Go

A lot of people don’t realize how much this tip helps, but cleaning as you go can do wonders for your time and sanity in the kitchen. Leaving the dishes for a few days while they pile up amounts to no fun when it comes to cleaning up the accumulated mess. Spending a few extra minutes every time you prepare something in the kitchen can prevent you from spending an hour or more at a later stage.

6. Make Breakfast After Dinner

By packing your breakfast and maybe even lunch for the next day straight after dinner, you can really save a lot of time by piggybacking off of dinner prep time. This will make your mornings that much easier when you have nothing to prepare in the kitchen.
