The 5 Most Friendliest and 5 Unfriendliest Cities In The World

Some cities welcome visitors and want them to be there. Other cities are rude to visitors and would just as soon see you leave. It can be jarring to be in an unfriendly city, though some of the world’s most enticing cities rank high on the rudeness scale.

When you visit a friendly city, it’s much easier to soak in the culture and meet the locals. Rough Guides readers voted on the cities for their level of friendliness. According to Rough Guides, these are the world’s friendliest and unfriendliest cities.

The Friendliest Cities

These cities offer a warm welcome to visitors and make them feel accepted. These cities take pride in their friendliness and how well they help visitors. There’s nothing like a friendly city to make travel more enjoyable.

Dublin

As the friendliest city in the world, the people of Dublin are warm and welcoming. They’re happy to share a pint with you. Just head for a pub and everyone there is your friend.

Bangkok

This city depends a lot on tourism, and the locals are happy to see tourists. They love meeting people and are helpful if you have a problem. Whether you’re downtown or at the beach, you can always find someone to talk to.

Tokyo

People in this city love to meet visitors and go out of their way to help them. They’re interested in meeting new people and love a chance to practice their English. It’s easy here to get to know people.

Singapore

Singapore is a safe and friendly city-state that’s known for its positive energy. It’s a major city, but it has a more chill vibe than many cities. People are welcoming and accommodating in this beautiful nation.

London

London is a place of contrasts with the old and the new existing side by side. It’s also a major, bustling city that’s also incredibly friendly and warm. People here are glad to meet you and will help you if you need it.

The Unfriendliest Cities

Don’t expect a warm welcome in these cities. And if you have a problem there, well, that’s up to you. These cities have their charm, but it doesn’t necessarily come from the people who inhabit them.

Paris

This shouldn’t surprise those who travel. It’s got a reputation for rudeness, and it was voted the world’s unfriendliest city. People in Paris aren’t welcoming, and they seem to barely tolerate visitors.

Moscow

The culture in Moscow is not to interfere when you don’t know someone. They don’t smile at strangers or try to help them if there’s a problem. It can feel very unfriendly and even rude to many travelers.

Madrid

The people here can be curt and too busy to say hello or help a traveler in trouble. The city is always busy, and its people are always in a hurry. They don’t have time to be welcoming.

Marrakesh

There are a lot of great things about this stunning city, but friendliness isn’t one of them. The locals are well-known for pretending to be friendly when there’s money involved.

Barcelona

The unfriendliness here has a lot to do with the pervasive presence of pickpocketers all over the city. They’re everywhere, and they can make the city feel mucho unwelcoming.
