It’s that time of year again when home bakers tear apart their kitchens to make cookies and other baked goods for their loved ones. And whether you’re a seasoned seasonal baker or someone just getting started, we’re covering the seven essentials you’ll want to have before you bother picking out your recipes.

A Good Mixer

You don’t need to necessarily splurge for a stand mixer. But if you’re baking, you need a reliable mixer that’s going to have more torque than your typing arm. If you’re using a stand mixer, resist the urge to mix it at high speed. Otherwise you’ll end up with flour all over your kitchen and clothes; start slowly at first to ensure everything is well incorporated before turning it up.

Cookie Cutters

What’s a festive baking season without some adorable cookie cutters in fun shapes? Whether you’re making gingerbread men, snowflakes, or Christmas trees, having a variety of cookie cutters will add a splash of holiday cheer to your baking. They don’t have to be “holiday,” either; maybe you have a dinosaur cookie cutter that you can give a little Santa hat for something different!

Baking Sheets

If you don’t already, invest in some quality baking sheets. It should be the kind that doesn’t warp in the heat and can handle all of your baking creations. Ideally, you’ll nab some non-stick baking sheets, but putting down a Silpat could potentially work, too, depending on what you’re trying to make. Different baking sheets could yield different results, especially for cookies, so keep that in mind when you’re choosing yours.

Measuring Cups and Spoons

Even if you’re not an avid baker, you probably know how important precision is if you want something to turn out okay. Accurate measurements are key to success in baking, so invest in cups and spoons that measure both dry and liquid. You probably already have at least one set, but having one that measures dry and liquid measurements is a game-changer for the home baker.

Quality Ingredients

Quality matters, especially when it comes to baking. Splurge a little on high-quality chocolate, real vanilla extract, and fresh spices. Your taste buds will thank you, and your cookies will taste like they came straight from the corner bakery. Oh, and don’t hesitate to add some nice sea salt to pretty much anything you bake to enhance the flavors even further!

Storage Containers

Stock up on storage containers to keep your sanity. You want them to store your baked goods and those leftover ingredients that didn’t make the cut. Remember to label your containers so that your future self isn’t furious when they accidentally grab the powdered sugar when they meant to add flour.

Gift Wrap and Accessories

If you’re giving your baked goods out as gifts this holiday season, then you’ll want to snag some festive boxes and wrapping accessories so you can dole them out in style. It doesn’t need to be anything too fancy, but you also don’t want to give out your cookies in those nice storage containers we just suggested you add to your cart!
