Coffee is more than just a beverage—it’s a medicine, a ritual that many of us partake in before we can do anything else with our day.

So it’s essential that you don’t take buying a new coffee maker lightly; here are our six tips to help you buy a coffee maker that will brew you the perfect cup every time.

How Do You Take Your Coffee?

Before you dive into the world of coffee makers, take a moment to think about your coffee preferences. Are you a fan of a classic drip brew, or do you fancy the bold flavors of a nice espresso? Identify your coffee style first before you start your search in earnest.

If you love experimenting with different types of coffee, a versatile machine like a drip coffee maker with a built-in grinder might be your best bet. If you’re more of a “one cup, one-time” person, a single-serve machine could be right for you.

Think About Size and Capacity

Now that you know your coffee style, it’s time to think about size. Think about how much coffee you typically drink and how many people you’re brewing for. If you’re the only coffee drinker in the house, a small single-serve machine might suffice.

However, if you’re a person interested in frequently hosting brunches or have a household full of coffee lovers, you’ll be better off with a larger-capacity coffee maker.

Set a Budget

Coffee makers can range from budget-friendly to “I hope this brews gold” prices. It’s important to set a budget before you start shopping, or you might find yourself drooling over a fancy espresso machine that costs as much as a small car.

Decide how much you’re willing to spend and stick to it. Keep in mind that while a higher price tag often comes with more features, there are plenty of affordable options that brew a great cup of coffee. You don’t need to break the bank to enjoy your daily cup of joe.

Look For Features That Matter

Let’s talk about features—but only ones that matter. Maybe you’re someone who’d benefit from a programmable timer so you always have fresh coffee when you wake up. Or maybe you’d prefer a built-in grinder so you can have the freshest cup possible.

Make a list of what would be nice to have versus what you have to have. Consider things like multiple brew sizes and auto shut-offs as well—you won’t necessarily need all of these, but choosing the few that matter makes a big difference.

Read Reviews and Do Your Research

Once you have a model in mind, it’s time to do your due diligence and see if the coffee maker is as good as it sounds. Check out reputable websites and forums that can provide some insight into how the coffee maker actually performs.

You’ll want to know if that fancy machine is worth the hype or if you’re better off starting your search from scratch.

Consider Maintenance

Last but not least, consider how much effort you’re willing to put into cleaning and maintaining your coffee maker. Some machines require regular descaling and deep cleaning, while others are practically self-cleaning.

Check the maintenance requirements before you buy anything, especially if you prefer to have one that at least has removable parts you can run through your dishwasher.
