Many people find cooking to be extremely intimidating.

They think it’s way too difficult and wave away any possibilities that they, too, could heat up a can of soup on the stove without burning the whole place down.

But it’s a lot more approachable than you think; here are seven tips to help you get started in the kitchen, even if you can barely boil water for pasta. You’ll be a pro cook in no time.

Prepping Is Your Best Friend

The first tip for the home cook who can barely boil water is to embrace the power of prepping.

Before you start cooking, gather all your ingredients and utensils. Chop, measure, and organize everything like you’re preparing to star in a cooking show at home. This way, when you’re in the heat of the moment (literally), you won’t have to frantically search for that elusive can of diced tomatoes.

Start Simple

If you’re still trying to master the art of boiling water, it’s best to start with simple recipes.

Think of dishes that require minimal ingredients and steps, like scrambled eggs or a classic grilled cheese. These dishes are not only delicious but also extremely forgiving (and still pretty delicious even if you mess them up a bit).

Invest in Quality Tools

Investing in quality kitchen tools can make a world of difference in your cooking experience.

A good knife can turn chopping vegetables from a chore into a satisfying task. A non-stick pan can save you from the horror of scrubbing burnt food off your cookware.

Just steer clear away from tools that over-promise to make cooking easy for you. While some, like rice cookers or air fryers, can seriously upgrade your cooking, others, like unitaskers, are a waste of money for a cook who’s still learning the ropes.

Love Your Oven

The oven is your friend, especially if you’re not quite ready to tackle the stovetop. Baking is often more forgiving than frying, and you can set a timer and walk away without the risk of burning down the kitchen.

Start with simple oven recipes like roasted vegetables or baked chicken. Just toss your ingredients in a baking dish, season them, and let the oven do all the work.

Experiment Once You Build Confidence

Cooking is about having fun! So once you feel like you’ve gotten your bearings in the kitchen, feel free to improvise.

It’s through swapping out ingredients or adding a splash of this and that that you start to listen to your chef’s intuition. Sure, not all experiments will be successful. But that’s an important part of the learning process!

Watch Tutorials

There’s no shame in seeking out knowledge if you don’t know what you’re doing. The internet is fantastic for this—there are plenty of videos to guide you through virtually every recipe you can imagine, even boiling water!

Learning is an essential part of building your confidence and skill set in the kitchen, so it’s time to use your YouTube algorithm for good!

Celebrate Your Successes

When you succeed, pat yourself on the back! When you don’t, laugh it off and embrace the process. Cooking is meant to be fun, so don’t be too hard on yourself when things don’t work out. Just note where things went wrong and learn from it for next time!
