A backyard barbecue is a fantastic way to gather friends and family for quality time without breaking the bank. With some creativity and strategic planning, you can host an unforgettable barbecue on a budget.

Here are six tips to help you throw a memorable backyard bash this summer without overspending.

Plan Ahead and Set a Budget

The cornerstone of any successful, budget-friendly event is thorough planning. Start by determining how much you can afford to spend. Once you have your budget, break down your expenses into categories: food, drinks, decorations, and any additional needs like seating or a grill rental. By setting a budget, you’ll avoid overspending and can make informed decisions about where to splurge and where to save.

Use What You Have

Before heading out to buy new items, take stock of what you already own. Do you have enough chairs and tables? Is your grill in good working condition? Can you repurpose any household items for decorations? For instance, mason jars can double as drinkware or lanterns when filled with candles. You can significantly cut down on unnecessary expenses by using what you have. Plus, it gives your barbecue a personal touch.

Simplify Your Menu

While offering a gourmet spread is tempting, sticking to a simple menu can be just as satisfying and far more economical. Focus on classic barbecue staples like hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken. These items are usually less expensive and crowd-pleasers. To add variety without going overboard, consider asking guests to bring a side dish or dessert. This lightens your load and allows everyone to contribute to the event.

DIY Your Decor

Creating your own decorations can be fun and cost-effective. Use colorful tablecloths, banners, and fairy lights to set the mood. You can also get crafty with items from dollar stores or nature; think about using flowers, leaves, or stones to create centerpieces. Not only does this save money, but it also adds a unique flair to your event. It’s okay if some of it is rough and ready; there’s a certain charm to DIY that pre-made items just can’t don’t have.

Shop Smart

There are plenty of ways to save money when buying food and drinks. Shop at discount stores or wholesale clubs for bulk items. Keep an eye out for sales and use coupons whenever possible. Planning your menu around what’s on sale can also help stretch your budget. For drinks, consider making a large batch of a signature cocktail or punch instead of buying various expensive beverages. Water and homemade lemonade or iced tea can be refreshing, cheap options.

Entertainment on a Budget

Entertainment doesn’t have to cost a lot. Music is a must for any barbecue, so create a playlist of your favorite tunes or ask guests to contribute their favorite songs. Lawn games like cornhole, frisbee, or even a simple game of catch can keep everyone engaged and entertained. Consider setting up a photo booth with props for some added fun and lasting memories.
