You’re finally ready to take your plant-based diet to the next level and go vegan. It’s understandable to be nervous about what you’re going to eat or how you’ll cope without things like cheese or…cheese.

But we’re helping you out with seven tips that’ll make the transition a lot more seamless.

Prepare Yourself Snacks Ahead of Time

Hunger can strike at any moment, and you don’t want to find yourself face-to-face with a cheese platter. Stock up on vegan snacks like nuts, fruit, and energy bars. Your future self will thank you when you avoid that awkward “I just ate a block of cheddar” moment. Delicious? Sure. Defeating the purpose of changing your diet? Also yes.

Learn to Cook (If You Already Haven’t)

If you’ve relied on pre-packaged vegetarian meals, now’s the time to channel your inner chef. Start with simple recipes and gradually work your way up to more complicated dishes. Who knows? You might just discover a hidden talent for vegan baking. And even if it doesn’t come naturally to you, it’ll still be a lot easier to be self-reliant on meals rather than just hoping life will have delicious vegan options wherever you go.

Embrace Tofu

Tofu is like the chameleon of the vegan world. It’s no longer the maligned protein it used to be years ago, so chances are if you’re a vegetarian you’ve already tried it. But it’s about to become a bigger part of your life, so learn to love it! Try out different kinds, like silken or extra firm, and use them in different applications aside from that stir fry you love.

Befriend Beans

Another food friend you should add to the roster is beans. They’re packed to the brim with protein and fiber, and they make some decent meat substitutes, too, like in black bean burgers. They’re also remarkably cheap and easy to make from scratch if you have some extra time on your hands.

Find Vegan Comfort Food

You’re probably sad about no more pizza or ice cream. But fortunately, we’re living in a delicious future where vegan alternatives are everywhere if you know where to look. Visit local vegan joints and see what they have in terms of comfort food. Depending on where you live, you might find that going vegan is a lot easier than you think—just try and keep those delivery costs to a minimum by teaching yourself to cook as well!

Know How to Shop

Preparing for your grocery shop with lists and meal plans is a must if you want to go vegan. Hoping to get inspired in the aisle is a recipe for disaster; know what you’re looking for, read the labels carefully, and maybe even make sure the place your going has the vegan essentials in stock before you grab your cart and go for it.

Surround Yourself With the Community

Surround yourself with fellow plant-based enthusiasts! Join vegan groups on social media, attend local meetups, or even follow a few vegan influencers for a more inspired scrolling experience. It’s always nice to have someone to share your kale chip triumphs and epic recipe fails with.
