Your home is no restaurant; it’s tough to compete with the decor, lighting, and service you’d get from the highly recommended place down the street. But you can certainly come close with these six tips that are guaranteed to transform even the simplest meal into something special, even when you’re at the kitchen table.

Use Nice Tableware

What good is your finest china if you never break it out? Most people are waiting for an occasion to use nice tableware, but why not do something special for yourself on a random Sunday night? And if you haven’t already, invest in some high-quality tableware you feel comfortable using. Just don’t forget to actually use it! You can also try arranging your tableware in a way that’s aesthetically pleasing, even if it’s just for yourself.

Try Plating Techniques

Even if you’re serving up some mac and cheese, you can still make it look like it came from a restaurant kitchen with some attention to detail and technique. Learn about how to plate with sauces and try to incorporate garnishes. They should still make sense with the dish and enhance it rather than simply being there for decoration. But thoughtful plating and nice tableware just by themselves are both going to do wonders for creating a unique dining experience at home.

Play Some Music

Nothing helps set the mood quite like a good playlist. Music that fits the vibe you’re looking for can help make a comfier atmosphere, especially if you’re cooking for guests. Keep it to music that isn’t too distracting so conversation can still flow. Classical at a lower volume is always a good option if you aren’t sure what to play. But the vibe will likely be dictated by the guests you’re having, so maybe EDM makes sense for your crew—the choice is yours!

Share With Loved Ones

Breaking bread with family members and friends is one of the joys of cooking. And much like using nicer tableware, you don’t need a special occasion to rally them around your dining room table! Have friends over “just because” on a random day and turn that boring Wednesday dinner into a memorable experience.

Break Out the Candles

It’s a little cliche, but that’s because it works—dining by candlelight can turn even a TV dinner into an intimate or romantic moment. Avoid using scented candles, as they can often conflict with the sensory experience you put so much effort into with the food. Turn the lights down lower for the best effect and don’t go so overboard that it looks like you’re using a Ouija board rather than a cutting board.

Serve Up a Special Dessert

Dessert is often reserved for dining out or a “cheat day” for some people. But one of the best ways to make your home dining experience a bit more special is by serving your meal in courses, with one of them being the best course of all: dessert. It doesn’t have to be anything too fancy; even just some fresh berries and whipped cream can be a beautiful way to end a meal at home.
