When it comes to food, there’s no shortage of items that get hyped up. But sometimes, the reality doesn’t live up to the reputation. Here are 12 foods that many people find just “meh” despite the hype.

Caviar

Caviar is often seen as the ultimate luxury food, but the salty, fishy taste and tiny texture can be off-putting. For many, it’s an exorbitantly expensive acquired taste.

Avocado Toast

Avocado toast has become a stereotypical “hipster” breakfast, but it’s often just overrated. Not everyone enjoys the taste of avocado, and the price of avocado toast at cafes is often inflated.

Wagyu

Wagyu beef is famous for its marbling and tenderness, but it can be too rich and fatty. The high price tag doesn’t help either, making some prefer a good old-fashioned steak instead.

Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potato fries are hailed as a healthier alternative to regular fries, but they don’t win everyone over. The sweeter taste and difference in texture leave many people craving white potatoes.

Kale

Kale is considered one of the top superfoods, but the tough texture and slightly bitter taste aren’t appealing to everyone. Spinach or other greens are often preferred for their ease of use in dishes.

Lobster

Lobster is a delicacy for many, but it’s not universally loved. The effort of cracking open the shell and its often rubbery texture can make it feel like more work than it’s worth.

Truffles

Truffles are a prized culinary ingredient, but their earthy, musky flavor can be too strong. The overwhelming aroma and hefty price tag often make them less appealing.

Macarons

Macarons are beautiful and come in various flavors, but they can lack substance. Their delicate texture and sugary sweetness might be underwhelming, especially given their cost.

McRibs

McRibs have a cult following, but many find them disappointing or just plain gross. Along with accusations of declining quality in recent years, the combo of processed meat and overly sweet barbecue sauce can make it feel more like fast food hype than a must-have.

Escargot

Escargot, or cooked snails, is a French delicacy that doesn’t appeal to everyone. The chewy texture and garlic butter sauce often leave people wondering what the fuss is about.

Starbucks

Starbucks is beloved by many, but some coffee enthusiasts find it overrated. The high prices and often overly sweet drinks can be a turn-off for those who prefer their coffee simpler and more affordable.

Twinkies

Twinkies are an iconic snack cake, but their artificial taste and overly sweet filling don’t impress everyone. While some people feel Twinkies were always gross, others believe the quality took a nosedive after the bankruptcy of the Hostess company.
