Eating fruits and vegetables is a great way to stay healthy and is almost always the best choice. But when you take a bite of one of these fruits or vegetables without washing them, you might make a bit of a mistake.

That’s because eating one of these without washing them can give you a bit more than you bargained for! So next time you reach for that fruit (or vegetable), wash it properly first!

Apples

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but only if you wash it first! Apples often have a wax coating applied to enhance their appearance and prolong shelf life. This wax can trap pesticides and dirt. A good scrub under running water can help remove this coating, ensuring you enjoy every crisp bite free of unwanted chemicals.

Spinach

Spinach is a nutrient-dense superfood, but its leaves can harbor soil, pesticides, and even tiny insects. To make sure your salads and smoothies are contamination-free, give your spinach a thorough rinse in a colander under cool running water. For extra safety, soak the leaves in a water bowl for a few minutes and then rinse again.

Strawberries

These juicy red gems are a summer favorite, but their delicate skin can hold onto pesticide residues and dirt. Place your strawberries in a colander and rinse them gently under cold running water. Avoid soaking them, as this can lead to soggy berries. Pat them dry with a paper towel before enjoying their sweet burst of flavor.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are often waxed to keep their skin looking fresh and appealing. Unfortunately, this wax can seal in pesticides and other residues. Whether you peel your cucumbers or not, it’s really important to wash them thoroughly. Use a vegetable brush to scrub the skin under running water to remove any lingering dirt and chemicals.

Grapes

Grapes grow in clusters, making them susceptible to dirt, dust, and pesticides. These tiny fruits need a good rinse before eating. Place the grapes in a colander and wash them under cool running water. Gently agitate the grapes to ensure all sides are cleaned. For an added measure, soak them in a solution of water and vinegar (1:3 ratio) for a few minutes before rinsing again.

Bell peppers add a delightful crunch and color to any dish, but their grooves and stems can trap dirt and pesticides. Rinse your peppers under running water and use your fingers to scrub away any debris, paying extra attention to the stem area. Dry them with a clean cloth or paper towel before slicing them up for your recipes.
