You’re probably always hearing about how breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But does anyone actually know why? We’re here to clue you in with eight reasons why breakfast is not a meal you want to skip.

Kickstart Your Metabolism

Your body is fasting while you’re asleep, so you often feel sluggish in the morning. Breakfast is the perfect remedy for this, helping your body get back into gear for your day and giving it the energy it needs. Skipping breakfast can lead to slower metabolic rates, making it harder to burn off calories later.

Improve Your Concentration

You’re not alone if you’ve been sitting at your desk with your head in your hands, unable to accomplish your morning to-do list. But did you know that hunger plays a massive role in your ability to concentrate and perform? People who eat breakfast consistently don’t just feel better; they’re boosting their cognitive functioning by providing their brains with something nutritious right away in the morning.

Lower Your Stress Levels

Stress and irritability can arise from many different things, but a lack of food or nutrition is often an overlooked one. Your mood and stress response are both heavily impacted by the food you eat (or don’t eat). Having breakfast regularly could positively affect your morning grumpiness, so if you find yourself easily frustrated before noon, breakfast could be the solution!

Establish Healthier Eating Habits

Healthy eating is often undermined by the need for something quick. How often do you zoom out the door, only to address your morning hunger pangs with a fast food breakfast or a donut? If your goal is to have healthier eating habits, breakfast can often set the tone for the rest of your day and, frankly, the rest of your diet.

Slow Down

Today’s world constantly demands more of us, but there’s fortunately been a reprioritization of the self; it’s never been more important to slow things down and be present. Wake up early, make yourself something nice for breakfast, and slowly make your way into your morning. This time is incredibly valuable for reflecting or even connecting with loved ones, so take advantage of it whenever you can.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Those who skip breakfast often overeat later to compensate for their lack of calories. And this overeating usually doesn’t mean having a bag of carrots all to yourself; many will grab quick convenience foods that are significantly less healthy and contain salt, fat, and sugar that will just make you want to eat even more of them. Breakfast will tame your hunger and your desire to indulge in unhealthy snacks.

Support Long-Term Health

Breakfast is an opportunity to give your body the nutrients it needs to live a long, happy life. Many good breakfast options are high in fiber, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, which are essential for keeping your heart healthy. These foods can also help you lower your cholesterol. Since lowering stress and boosting your mood can also help you live longer, remembering your breakfast is a holistic answer to your overall well-being.
