We’d be lying if we said there was one particular food to eat in order to avoid cancer. The truth is that there are several types of foods, or rather superfoods, that can help you live longer by managing type 2 diabetes, regulating healthy body weight, staving off cardiovascular ailments, and even reducing your risk of cancer.

The key is filling your plates with these foods on a regular basis if you want to live a balanced life. If you’d like to learn more about the superfoods that can lower your risk of cancer, then read on.

1. Pulses

Pulses such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, and peas should be on everyone’s grocery list if they want to consume more cancer-fighting foods.

These superfoods contain high levels of fiber, and they are low in fat and high in protein, which makes them the perfect ingredient for a balanced diet. Due to the significant amounts of insoluble fiber in pulses, they may also hold the key to reducing the risk of colorectal cancer when consumed on a regular basis.

2. Broccoli

Along with cabbage,  cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, and kale, broccoli forms part of the cruciferous vegetable branch. Studies have proven that these superfoods contain specific types of plant compounds that can protect several areas of the body that form part of the digestive tract, such as the stomach, mouth, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus, from cancer development.

The special compound that they contain can reduce the risk of cancer by inactivating a particular gene that plays a fundamental role in cancer cell formation. Broccoli, in particular, is the richest source of the cancer-thwarting compound known as sulforaphane. Furthermore, the cruciferous vegetable family is packed with a great deal of various health-boosting nutrients.

3. Berries

It’s no secret that berries contain high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C.

Antioxidants have been proven to shield the body from cell autotrophy and damage that can lead to several types of cancers, such as skin cancer and other internal organ cancers. Berries can be consumed dried, fresh, or frozen for them to have a positive effect on the human body.

4. Whole Grains

Whole grains are not only great for the wallet, but they have several health-boosting properties too.

Whole grains such as barley, brown or wild rice, oatmeal, and quinoa are packed with fiber, minerals, and vitamins, which all have the ability to curb the risks of cancer when consumed on a regular basis. Seeing as they are relatively cheap, there really is no reason for you not to eat these superfoods on a regular basis.

5. Fatty Fish

Fatty fish include anchovies, mackerel, and salmon, to name a few, and these particular fish are rich in potassium, B vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Studies have illustrated that omega-3 fatty acids are a “super-component” in lowering breast cancer. Consuming fish regularly ultimately plays a role in decreasing one’s risk of colorectal cancer.
