Are Your Healthy Foods Killing You? The 12 Produce Items Loaded With Pesticides

Pesticides are widely used in growing virtually every type of crop. We know that fruits and vegetables are good for us, but eating them may also come with a substantial amount of pesticides. EWG.org did a large study on various types of fruits and vegetables to see which ones had the most pesticide residue left on them.

According to EWG, these are the dozen items of produce that have the highest pesticide levels.

Strawberries

The taste of strawberries is unmatched by any other food. Strawberries are full of sunshine and tanginess, but they’re also full of pesticides. When you buy these, make sure to wash them thoroughly.

Spinach

Spinach is one of the healthy leafy greens that doctors so often recommend that patients eat. As a source of various vitamins and iron, these deliver a nutrient-dense addition to any meal.

Kale, Collard, and Mustard Greens

These greens are just as healthy as spinach and are seeing a Renaissance in today’s cooking. They pack a high degree of nutrients including vitamins and minerals, but you’ll need to wash them thoroughly before enjoying them.

Antioxidants are important for helping the body to avoid cell damage from free radicals. Grapes are full of important antioxidants, but you’ll need to scrub your grapes when you bring them home.

Peaches

Another fruit that’s high in antioxidants, this sweet treat is perfect for a hot day. The level of pesticides on them, however, should concern anyone who enjoys eating them.

Pears

Pears have antioxidants plus vitamin K and potassium. They’re a snack that’s easy to take with you and a favorite for lunchboxes. The amount of pesticides on it means you have to clean them carefully.

Nectarines

Let’s face it: nectarines are cute. They’re an adorable fruit that has a lot of fiber as well as copper, potassium, and vitamin C. Enjoy them responsibly after a good scrub with a fruit brush.

Apples

There’s nothing more American than apples, and they’re loved practically universally. Many growers, however, use excessive pesticides on them since bugs like them so much.

Bell and Hot Peppers

Some meals wouldn’t be the same without the addition of some peppers. Bell peppers have vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin B6, folate, and vitamins E and A.

It’s no wonder that so many things are cherry-flavored. The taste of cherries is to be savored, but that’s only after they’ve been thoroughly washed to get rid of the pesticide residue.

Blueberries

Blueberries have a wide variety of antioxidants and are one of the healthier pieces of produce you can eat. Because they have so much pesticide on them, carefully clean them before eating.

Green Beans

Green beans also have a lot of vitamins such as Vitamins A, K, and C. They also pack folate, calcium, and iron into each little bean. After a good scrub, they can go with a wide range of meals.
