12 Things You Probably Shouldn’t Put in the Dishwasher

Dishwashers save a lot of time and work, and no one who owns one yearns for the days of washing everything by hand. However, some things should never be put in a dishwasher out of concern that they may damage them or the dishwasher.

Make sure you’re not using the dishwasher for any of the following things!

Kitchen Knives

Regularly washing your good knives in the dishwasher can dull their sharp edges over time. It’s better to carefully wash them by hand with soap and warm water.

Copper Mugs

If you enjoy Moscow Mules, you might be tempted by the convenience of the dishwasher when you need to clean one. Avoid that temptation; this can cause tarnishing and a diminished luster.

Wooden Cutting Boards and Utensils

The hot water in a dishwasher can cause these items to warp, crack, or split apart. The heat also makes wooden cutting boards look old and worn.

Fine China and Crystal

Sometimes, these things have been in families for generations. Don’t let yours be the generation responsible for chips, cracks, and color fades because you put these delicate items in the dishwasher.

Unrinsed Plates

People argue all the time about whether it’s more or less efficient to rinse plates off before putting them in the dishwasher. What shouldn’t be in dispute is whether you should put in plates that have large chunks of food still on them. These can clog the dishwasher. You don’t have to put the plate in looking spotless, but do rinse off the big stuff and really sticky stuff as well.

Graters

Like kitchen knives, graters can lose their sharp edges due to the caustic conditions inside a dishwasher. Wash them gently and carefully by hand instead.

Aluminum and Cast Iron Cookware

Dish detergent and really hot water can remove the oil layer on cast iron, leading to rust. Aluminum can become darkened, pitted, or corroded.

Some nonstick cookware is labeled as dishwasher-safe, but don’t take chances. The dishwasher can degrade the nonstick coating and even lead to chipping.

Insulated Cups and Tumblers

These contain two layers with air between them, and that air creates the insulation. The dishwasher temperatures can cause cracking that lets water in, ruining the insulation effect.

Printed or Painted Glasses

Do you have a pint glass with the painted logo of your favorite beer? Wash it by hand after finishing your beverage; the dishwasher will cause the coloring and letters to fade over time.

Ziploc Bags

Many people reuse ziploc bags that don’t have holes in them to save money and reduce plastic waste. That’s fine, but you should clean them by hand since the dishwasher can melt or shrink them.

If you run out of dish detergent, go buy some more or do a wash with only hot water. The dish soap you keep on the counter will bubble up like crazy in the dishwasher, and it will probably leak out onto your floors.

The “Sell by” date on food packaging tells how long the food can stay on shelves, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s when it expires. On the other hand, the “Best by” or “Use by” date is something to really pay attention to.

Some foods can be fine well past that date, but others don’t, and consuming them can lead to food poisoning, a trip to the hospital, or worse. Following are some foods you should never consume after they expire.
