Baking can be a lot more frustrating than cooking for many people. There’s a lot more measuring and less room for error, so many home cooks avoid it altogether.

If you are already a decent baker and want to get to the next level then we can help you with that too! While, as with all things, practice makes perfect and nothing can substitute hours spent in the kitchen and all the different things you try to bake there are certain basic elements that can quickly make you a better baker.

We’re here to help you get to the next level: here are eight tips for becoming a better baker.

Start With Quality Ingredients

Using fresh, high-quality ingredients can make a significant difference in the taste and texture of your baked goods. This includes paying attention to how fresh your flour, baking powder, or spices are—they make up a major portion of the final bake, so using something that’s years old will probably taste like it is.

Get to Know Your Oven

Ovens are notoriously touchy—some run warmer than others, so checking yours and adjusting accordingly will improve your baking drastically! Invest in an oven thermometer to ensure you’re baking at the correct temperature. Also, remember to rotate your pans halfway through baking to ensure even cooking.

Get Your Mise en Place Down

This is a cooking AND baking tip, but having everything out in front of you before you start cooking will completely change the game for you. “Mise en place” is a French culinary term that means “everything in its place.” Measure out all your ingredients and have them ready to go before you bother with the baking part. This not only makes the process smoother but also helps prevent mistakes.

Avoid Overmixing

Overmixing can develop the gluten in the flour, leading to a tougher and much less desirable texture in your baked goods. You should only mix until just combined, and be extra delicate with fragile ingredients like chocolate or berries to ensure they stay intact in the oven.

Practice Decorating

You don’t have to be a master decorator to bake, but investing in even just a small amount of time into learning to decorate can transform your cakes and cookies. Pick up a few piping tips and practice simple designs like rosettes or stars. A turntable can make frosting cakes easier, and a bench scraper can help achieve smooth, professional-looking sides.

Use the Right Tool for the Job

Quality baking tools can make a massive difference, but so can ensuring you’re using the right one for what you’re trying to accomplish. Which tool you should use will vary between bakes, but check the recipe and heed the advice of what you should use: if it says whisk, use a whisk!

Be Thorough With Your Recipe Reading

On that note, reading your recipe is a crucial step you should be doing before you even bother to decide on baking. Do so before you head to the store to make sure you have everything you need. And while you go through each step, double-check to make sure you’re doing it right first. It’ll eventually become second-nature to you, but for now, stick with the recipe to a tee if you want a good result.

Practice!

Keep practicing, learn from your mistakes, and most importantly, have fun. Baking should be a joyful and creative process. Experiment with new recipes, share your creations with friends and family, and celebrate your progress, no matter how small!
