Do you love your dog?
Dogs are truly a man’s best friend, and we often consider them part of our family. When we eat delicious food, we might want to share it with our furry friends—especially when they beg so nicely.
But if you truly love your dog, you can’t just feed it anything you want. Some foods are toxic to dogs- keep them away from your best friend!
Food From the Grill
With BBQ season upon us, Dr. Aziza Glass, DVM, CVA, Expert Veterinarian at Freshpet, warns dog owners not to feed their pets food from the grill. Fatty meats and scraps are not good for dogs, as they can cause GI Issues, leading to diseases like pancreatitis.
She warned that although the meats themselves are not toxic to dogs, how they are seasoned and prepared for BBQ can be harmful to dogs and pets. This includes common grilled foods like chicken wings, which have small bones that present a choking hazard, or ribs, which can be fatty and cause intestinal blockage if the bone is ingested.
Chocolate
Did you know that chocolate is seriously toxic for dogs? It contains theobromine and caffeine, two substances that can wreak havoc on a dog’s heart and central nervous system, potentially leading to fatal consequences.
Raisins
Raisins can be toxic for dogs as well, which is a problem because they are small and hard to keep track of, especially if you have little kids. Terri Brown, a dog owner who writes about her experiences at The Strawberry Fountain, says, “I always make sure that we don’t feed our dog raisins, which can be hard when the youngest loves them. However, we do need to be really careful that the dog doesn’t find any stray ones as raisins are toxic for them and can cause severe acute kidney failure.”
Raw Meat
Dogs enjoy meat, but raw meat can be dangerous for humans and dogs alike. Raw meat can harbor potentially deadly bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. FDA.gov cautions dog owners to make sure that their dogs don’t grab raw meat from the counter when their human owners are preparing food. While dogs aren’t as susceptible as humans to bacteria, they can still get gravely ill from raw meat.
