Even if you’re not a worldly foodie, everyone can agree that trying new foods is one of the best things about travel! Street food, in particular, provides a window into the heart and soul of a local community and culture.

Eating food from around the globe is a great way to expand your palette and experience new cultures, and nothing showcases that food as much as street food.

Here are six must-try street foods from around the globe that are guaranteed to enrich your travel experience.

Takoyaki, or octopus balls, are a popular street food in Japan, especially in Osaka. These round, doughy snacks are filled with pieces of octopus, tempura scraps, and green onions, then cooked in special molds and topped with a savory sauce and bonito flakes.

Takoyaki is one of the few street foods on this list that won’t be as familiar to some, but if you’re a seafood fan, then don’t leave Japan without ordering some while you’re out exploring.

Samosas — India

These crispy, triangular pastries are filled with spiced potatoes, peas, and sometimes meat, making them a popular snack across India. Samosas are often enjoyed with tangy tamarind chutney or a refreshing mint sauce. They’re portable pockets of vegetable goodness, packed with incredible aromatic flavors that you can’t find just anywhere.

And did we mention they’re often fried? If you’ve yet to try a samosa for yourself, you can often order them from your local Indian restaurant, but don’t miss out on the opportunity to try an authentic one if you’re traveling there.
